Building Benches, Building Character: Jackson Music’s Servant Leadership Project
At Chapel Hill Christian School (CHCS), we believe that faith and service go hand in hand. This truth was beautifully exemplified by Jackson Music, a proud CHCS alumni, who recently completed his Servant Leadership Project through Trail Life USA. With a heart for his former school and a desire to give back, Jackson built five sturdy benches for the North Campus playground. These benches now serve as a lasting testament to the power of faith, community, and servant leadership.
A Project with Purpose
Jackson’s project was more than just a construction task—it was a mission to bless the CHCS community. The benches provide a practical solution for both staff and students: “These benches will benefit the staff of Chapel Hill by providing a place for recess monitors to sit while still commanding a full view of the playgrounds; and allowing students to sit as well if they choose.” Whether it’s a teacher keeping watch or a student taking a moment to rest, these benches are already making a difference.
But the impact goes beyond the playground. Jackson’s project was also a lesson in leadership and organization. “I have enjoyed the challenge of organizing this project from fundraising to leading in the building of the benches, with members of my troop and youth group,” he shared. His journey reflects the heart of servant leadership—using one’s gifts to serve others while growing in faith and character.
Fundraising with Faith
To fund the project, Jackson got creative with a “no-bake-bake sale,” where supporters donated the cost of baking ingredients instead of purchasing baked goods. The response was overwhelming: “Praise the Lord, we raised $701 resulting in a surplus of $253.12 that was donated to the school.” This surplus was a blessing to CHCS, further demonstrating how God multiplies our efforts when we serve with open hearts.
Overcoming Challenges Through God’s Provision
No project is without its hurdles, and Jackson’s was no exception. Early in the process, he faced a significant setback: “I broke my foot at the beginning of the fall, it completely changed the outlook of my year.” Despite this, Jackson saw God’s hand at work. With the help of his father, fellow Trail Life members, and friends from church, he was able to continue. “The Lord provided me with the materials I needed when I needed them and used my recovery process to show me that He works all things for His will,” Jackson reflected.
His perseverance is a powerful reminder that God’s timing is perfect, even when our plans are disrupted. “I praise the Lord that He is faithful and works things to the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose,” he said, echoing Romans 8:28.
Trail Life: Shaping Servant Leaders
Jackson’s project was part of his “Freedom Project” through Trail Life USA, an exceptional Christian organization dedicated to developing young men of character. Trail Life’s mission aligns perfectly with CHCS’s values, focusing on leadership, service, and faith. “I’m happy to say that all obstacles were overcome, and the Lord provided the time, resources, and volunteers needed to complete the project to the glory of God,” Jackson shared.
Through Trail Life, Jackson learned invaluable lessons in patience, trust, and leadership. “I believe the attribute the Lord grew most in me in this process is patience,” he said, noting how delays and challenges became opportunities to rely on God’s provision.
A Lasting Legacy of Faith and Service
Today, the five benches stand as more than just places to sit—they are symbols of faith in action. “These benches are not fixed into the ground, which allows the school to move them wherever they are needed. This makes them both versatile and durable for years to come,” Jackson explained. But beyond their practicality, they represent the impact one person can have when they serve with a heart for God and others.
Jackson’s journey reminds us of Proverbs 16:9: “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” Through every challenge and triumph, Jackson saw God’s faithfulness. “He has taught me to trust His timing, including any surprises along the way, to testify to His faithfulness and His sovereignty,” he concluded.
At CHCS, we are grateful for alumni like Jackson who continue to bless our school and community. His project is a shining example of how faith, service, and leadership can come together to make a lasting difference. We also commend Trail Life USA for empowering young men like Jackson to grow in their walk with Christ while serving others.
