Optional Programs

Speech

When it is believed that a student in grades K through 6 may benefit from speech or language services, teachers and parents work as a team in making a referral for evaluation and possible intervention in receptive (listening) or expressive (speech / verbal or written language) communication skills. These services are carried out by a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist and may take place in the classroom, or individually or in small groups in the modular unit.

Examples of communication skills that may need attention include difficulty following oral or written directions; difficulty pronouncing sounds; trouble responding to questions or explaining things; voice problems; stuttering. It is very important to work to improve a student’s communication skills so that they do not affect success in classroom activities, social interaction, literacy, and learning.

Counseling

With the many stresses and demands of today’s society, children often need some extra encouragement. It is helpful for them to have someone at school with whom they can talk to and confide in. The Counseling office in the Mod, provides a warm, safe, and fun atmosphere where children can receive guidance, help, support, and a listening ear. Our Counselor loves caring about the precious children here at Chapel Hill!

The School Counselor also provide group experiences for the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade girls. Age appropriate topics are discussed during “Girl Talks” to discuss topics that prepare them for adolescence and help them with friendships and other areas.

Late Day

During the winter months when it is too cold to go outside after school, we offer our students an enrichment program entitled Late Day at Chapel Hill Christian School. For six weeks during February and March, parents are invited to share their special talents and abilities with the children after school. Our students have been taught how to crochet, knit, and create scrapbooks. Parents with journalism skills have helped students create a school newspaper and work on their creative writing skills. Parents have taught the students to play chess and learn sign language. Our 5th & 6th graders have even completed the Red Cross Babysitting Course.

Late Day affords parents the opportunity to form relationships with students out of their normal sphere of influence. It gives students the opportunity to learn skills beyond the traditional school curriculum. And, Late Day strengthens the bonds that make our school family strong and enduring.

Late Day was awarded the Exemplary School Program Award by the Association of Christian Schools International.

Chess Club

Chess has been a part of Chapel Hill Christian School for many years. In 2003, the club began entering local competitions. We have a history of having players and teams competing successfully in local and state wide competitions as well a number of individuals competing in national tournaments. Along these paths, they have had fun and have built each other up to reach individual and team achievements. The Chess Club meets after school once a week in the fall and spring.
